Handmade jewellery are not just products, they're expressions of creativity and craftsmanship. Artisans pour their heart and soul into each piece, making them one-of-a-kind works of art. When you wear a handmade item, you carry a piece of that artisan's passion and dedication with you.

Handcrafted items allow you to infuse your personality into your style. Many artisans offer customisation options, enabling you to create pieces that reflect your individuality or carry sentimental value. These items become more than accessories - they become symbols of your journey and your story.
Handmade jewellery offers an ever-evolving range of styles, ensuring you'll always find something unique and exclusive. Many artisans create limited editions, so you can be one of a few people to own a particular design.

When you choose handmade, you're not just acquiring a product. You're also supporting local artisans and their livelihoods. By doing so, you contribute to the preservation of traditional craftsmanship and help sustain local communities.
Mass-produced items often prioritise quantity over quality. Handmade jewellery, on the other hand, is crafted with meticulous attention to detail using high-quality materials. This results in beautiful pieces that stand the test of time.

Many artisans prioritise sustainability by using eco-friendly materials and production methods. Handmade items often generate less waste compared to mass production. This makes handcrafted items a more environmentally conscious choice.
Handmade jewellery creations are gateways to a world of artistry, personalisation, and craftsmanship. Whether you're adding to your collection or looking for a special gift, handcrafted treasures bring a touch of uniqueness to your life.
So, why not explore the world of handmade jewellery today? ]]>I was trying out Chat GPT to see what all the hype is about. So for something different, I got it to help me write a poem about my Morse code products. Chat GPT looks like an interesting product to help with writing inspiration. Have you used it yet? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
I have made a few changes to the poem that was created, but overall I think the AI didn't do too bad a job.
A Morse code treasure, oh what a sight,
A gift that's unique, with a message in sight,
A bracelet, a necklace, a keyring too,
A gift from the heart, meant only for you.
A message in beads, strung up with care,
A symbol of love, and a gift to share,
A way to express, what words cannot say,
A gift that's personal, in a special way.
Each dot and dash, a language untold,
A message between us, a story to unfold,
A message in code, that only you know,
A secret that's yours, a story to show.
So wear it with pride, and keep it close by,
A gift from the heart, meant only for you and I,
A Morse code treasure, a gift so divine,
A message of love, that will always shine.
Charm jewellery has been a popular form of adornment for centuries. With its versatility and personalisation, it’s no surprise that charm jewellery has stood the test of time. To this day it continues to still be a very popular fashion trend. So exactly why will charm jewellery never go out of fashion?
During the Neolithic era, charms were carried to ward off evil spirits. However, charm jewellery itself can be dated back to ancient civilizations.
The amulet is one of the earliest forms of charm jewellery. It was popular in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. These small pendants were often made of precious materials and were believed to protect the wearer from harm or bring good luck.
Queen Victoria is responsible for making charm bracelets popular in the 19th century. Charms were added to the chain bracelet over time, with the charms representing important events, beliefs or loved ones.
Charm jewellery became more accessible to the masses when cheaper materials (such as brass and glass) began being used to make charms. This change has enabled charm jewellery to be a popular jewellery trend ever since. Today, charm jewellery is available in a wide range of styles and materials to suit every taste and budget.
Charm jewellery is super versatile. It can be worn in a variety of ways, from the ever-popular charm bracelet to earrings, necklaces and even on a keychain. Whether you’re looking for a vintage-inspired piece or a contemporary design, charm jewellery will never go out of fashion. From delicate and intricate designs to bold and chunky pieces, there is a charm jewellery item suitable for everyone. This versatility means that it can be worn for any occasion, either casual or formal, and can be dressed up or down to suit the wearer’s style.
Charms are a way to express your personality. Whether it be a sentimental piece to represent an important event or milestone in your life, or a fun and quirky accessory to show your interests and hobbies. This personal touch is what sets charm jewellery apart and makes it a timeless and meaningful choice.
One of the best things about charm jewellery is the large variety of charms that are available today. From animals, nature and nautical to sports, hobbies, initials and symbols, there is a charm to represent nearly everything. So let's take a closer look at some popular types of charms.
Animal charms are always a very popular choice. From pets such as cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and tortoises to more exotic animals like koala bears, elephants, giraffes, seahorses and dinosaurs. There’s an animal charm to suit everyone’s interests.
Nature charms are a beautiful way to bring the outside world into your jewellery. From plants such as delicate flowers, mushrooms, leaves and trees to intricate butterflies and dragonflies. Not forgetting weather-related charms such as suns and snowflakes. Nature charms are a great way to add a touch of the natural world to your jewellery collection.
Nautical charms are a popular choice for those that have a love of the sea. From charms that represent sailing such as boats, anchors and helms, to the sea and beach with starfish, shells and the ever-mystical mermaid. There's a nautical charm to suit your taste.
For those with a passion for sports or hobbies, there are plenty of charm options available. From golf clubs, tennis rackets and ballet slippers to music notes, cameras and knitting needles. Along with charms associated with science and technology to travel.
Initial and birthstone charms are a popular choice for those looking to personalise their charm jewellery. Initial and birth month charms are a fantastic way to add that little extra personal touch to your jewellery.
There are charms that have added meaning or symbolism. Here are just a few examples of symbol charms.
Angel wing charms are a symbol of protection and guidance. They are often used to represent a loved one who has passed away.
For those wishing to express their beliefs or values there are charms such as crosses, stars of David along with astrological and celtic symbols.
Heart charms symbolise love, affection and emotional connection. They can be found in a wide range of styles, from delicate and intricate designs to bold and chunky pieces, making them the perfect choice for anyone looking to express their love and affection.
Infinity charms are a symbol of eternity, perpetuity, and endlessness. They represent the idea that love, friendship or other emotions are boundless and will last forever. Infinity charms are a popular choice for couples, friends and family members looking to express their eternal love and devotion.
Moon charms are a symbol of mystery, magic, and femininity. They represent the cyclical nature of life and the power of the moon, and are often used to represent the wearer’s connection to the natural world and their intuition. Moon charms are a popular choice for women looking to express their connection to the natural world and their inner selves.
Star charms are a symbol of hope, guidance and inspiration. They are also often used as a reminder to do one's best - reach for the stars, star pupil etc.
These are just a few examples of the many types of charms available. There are charms out there to express who you are and which suit your personal style.
With its versatility, personalization and sentimental value, charm jewellery has something to offer everyone. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of personal style to your jewellery collection or to give a truly meaningful gift, charm jewellery is an excellent choice that will never go out of style.
]]>This milestone wouldn't have been possible without all of you - my lovely customers - so thank you!
Over 1100 of you have left me reviews on my Etsy store too. I love to get your feedback, so let me know your thoughts.
]]>There have been changes to strike dates and new ones have been added:
It's likely that you've seen in the news that Royal Mail has announced a number of strike dates for this Autumn. If all the dates go ahead then expect regular delays in the UK not only with your normal post but with online purchases too.
I have always used Royal Mail for my deliveries since starting Purple Wyvern Jewels in 2012. And under normal circumstances, they are a very reliable delivery service. I understand that Royal Mail workers wouldn't have taken this decision lightly. And that they always aim to offer an excellent delivery service.
Unfortunately, for many businesses like mine that sell small lightweight items, there isn't a viable cost-effective alternative to using Royal Mail. So if you buy online and need your order by a certain date, then order early. Also, consider upgrading your shipping if a shop offers that option.
I personally offer shipping upgrades for deliveries within the UK. If time is of the essence with delivery then the fastest service will be via Special Delivery. Royal Mail - when they are working - will prioritise this delivery service. (For those buying from abroad, orders are shipped by Royal Mail international tracking which is a faster and prioritised service.)
]]>Stainless steel is an alloy, meaning that it is not a pure metal but mixed with other materials which can provide additional benefits. Gold and silver are also similarly mixed with other materials when used in jewellery items as they can be too soft to be useable in their pure state.
Items made from stainless steel can be polished to a high shine or left in a matte finish to create a different textured look.
What do you think of when you think of stainless steel jewellery?
I'm going to hazard a guess that you're thinking of thick chain necklaces and bracelets suitable for men. Whilst there is stainless steel jewellery like that, these days there is a much wider variety of parts available. So the thick chunky style is far from the only style of stainless steel jewellery on offer.
So I'm really pleased to announce (after waiting for over two months) I now finally(!) have more parts to make my popular sterling silver linked circle infinity ring necklace and bracelet.

"There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish." - Michelle Obama
However, many barriers can be put in front of women to hinder their ability to be what they want to be and accomplish what they want to achieve. Some of those barriers can be systematic throughout society and have a bias of what is "appropriate for a female". This year's theme for International Women's Day (IWD 2022) is break the bias.
"Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias" - InternationalWomensDay.com
One bias is that females are the weaker sex, that they are not strong enough, both physically and mentally.
One stereotype of that is that females aren't suited/capable of serving on the front lines in military confrontations. Don't bother telling that to the Ukrainian females that are helping to defend their country against the Russian army. To the military couple who got married on the front line, to the young women taking up arms in Kyiv who will fight alongside the men.
So females don't have the mental strength? Don't bother telling that to the Ukrainian woman who offered seeds to Russian soldiers so "sunflowers grow when they die". Or the countless other females that are standing up for their country and serving in other but equally important ways.
On this day it is hard for me to imagine a gender equal world. It would be remiss of me to not even mention world events and how they are this very day impacting around 22.5 million females in Ukraine.
When one man has decided he has the power to take and destroy what doesn't belong to him, with total disregard for innocent life, to not speak out is wrong.
"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men..." - Lord Acton
Vladimir Putin calls it a "special military operation". But let's call it for what it is - an invasion, a war!
This International Women's Day, think of the brave, strong and determined women in Ukraine.
May we hear their stories, know them and support them.
Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine and have been used as a symbol of peace. May the Ukrainian people know peace soon.

I honestly can't believe it's been nearly 10 years.
To celebrate and give thanks to my wonderful customers (and keeping me in business all these years), I will be creating some special birthday offers exclusive to my newsletter subscribers. ]]>Small businesses, in particular, depend on both word-of-mouth reviews and ones posted online. How often when considering purchasing an item do you look at the reviews? Or ask someone you know (or a local Facebook group) for recommendations for a local florist, painter, plumber, hairdresser etc? So having plenty of good reviews is important for any small business in order to attract more customers to purchase from them.
It depends... For highly personalised items where there is a lot of interaction with the business, customers are far more likely to leave a review due to the large interaction that they have. Where it's easy to buy with just a few clicks and no interaction is needed, then the number of customers who leave reviews is far smaller. In my experience, approximately 10-15% of those that have purchased a product will leave a review.
Which? have an article discussing how to spot fake reviews. Most small businesses will fall under their advice section of:
"Take extra care buying unknown brands - While many smaller brands that you don't recognise could be honest start-ups trying to find an audience in a crowded market, others attempt to take shortcuts to jump to the top of the listings. Time and again we've found fake reviews on brands we didn't recognise, and on most occasions it's difficult or impossible to get in touch with the brand to find out more. If you don't recognise a brand, check online to see if it has a legitimate looking website, with clear contact details so you can get in touch if anything goes wrong. You could even try calling or emailing the seller with a question, to see how quickly they respond."
It's not uncommon for small businesses, myself included to sell more through the big marketplace sites than through their own website. So many small business websites struggle to gain direct reviews posted onto their own site. As the majority of their reviews are written on the big marketplaces due to the volume of sales through those sites.
My solution to show off my customer's reviews for my products are to request those customers who have left reviews elsewhere if they would allow me to copy their review to this website. The majority of my customers do give permission for this. So whilst they might not have purchased through my website they are genuine reviews of my products and customer service. (My main selling site is Etsy so you can find many of the reviews on this site are customers who have purchased via Etsy and left me a review there.)
If you find the *perfect* item that you just want to buy, but you're unsure whether the reviews are genuine and to be trusted then:

]]>Take inspiration from my compilation of updated macramé home décor and fashion ideas. From the now not-so-traditional pot plant holders; wall hangings that can be art forms in their own right; modern wreaths; intricate jewellery and everyday versatile bags.
Pot plant hanging holders have been a staple of macramé décor.
For a different and unique twist on the pot plant holder, are these hot air balloons by Nicole Wilde:
Eva Larin from Started From Branch has created an untraditional wall mounted circular-shaped pot plant holder:
More modern and updated wall hangings are colourful and geometrical in design.
This dusky pink geometrical star by Jade Parkinson of Bleubell Macrame gives an elegant and updated look to macramé wall decorations:
Or in the case of Teddy and Wool by fibre artist Rianne Aarts, wall hangings have been elevated to art. I kept scrolling through her amazing items and found it difficult to just pick one to share. So do explore her incredible work!
Like wall hangings, bold colours and geometrical designs are now the go-to for coasters and placemats.
Annika Schellen of Makramee Mit Lieber (translation: Macramé with Love) is using shades of blue for these coasters:
Both geometrical and bold colours feature in these placemats by Amy of Home Made By Amy Rose:
On the smaller side, but still useful for decluttering those little odds and ends, is this hanging storage basket by Knot For Everyone:
Or for those that prefer more of a bowl design, Rima of Arioh Handmade Creations has created this mini basket:
Like decorating for events, such as Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and weddings? Celebration decorations with a unique twist can be made with the use of macramé.
Another beautiful décor idea by Jade Parkinson of Bleubell Macrame is this Christmas wreath:
Sarah Wallace of A String Ballard helped make this beautiful floral arbour. Created by mixing macramé and fresh flowers together in this stunning design:
When thinking of macramé jewellery, what do you think of? Maybe friendship or Shamballa bracelets? Using a finer cord (micro macramé) it's possible to create super intricate jewellery designs.
Check out this video showing the intricate detail that Natalia Frolova of Nata Frolova Macrame has used on this beaded malachite bracelet:
And back to a geometric bracelet design by Julie's Way:
Quite often macramé creations are made from natural cords such as cotton twine, hemp and jute. So, it's not surprising that the designs themselves can also at times be nature-inspired.
A gorgeous example is this beautiful sunflower bracelet and necklace by Heneliisa Macrame:
Macramé clothing by its very design is normal to wear over other clothing. This style is therefore typically for the beach-loving or the musical festival-goers...
A blue macramé cover-up dress worn over a matching bikini is a great look for the beach created by Zilya Nova of Nova Design Handmade:
Whereas Isabella Strambio has gone for a waistcoat design:
Check out the latest from Italian fashion designer Alberta Ferretti. She has put together a Spring/Summer 2022 collection that features some macramé clothing.
Will it be the new hit clothing fashion of 2022? We'll have to wait and see...
Macramé bags can be great for ditching the plastic if made from natural cords. They can be created in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Diora Macrame has created this orange tote bag - great for popping out to the shops:
Then check out this convertible macramé bag by Becky Silver of Silver Tulips. It can be worn both as a backpack and as a crossbody bag:
Or this bag by Eskai Home that comes with a strap and handles:
Then there are numerous online tutorials (both free and paid for) where you can learn how to make macramé. It helps to start small to learn the basic knots and make something that is reasonably quick to make. This could be bracelets or small wall hangings (which can sometimes be sold as kits) as a great way to get you started. Some people learn better from written words and pictures. But for those that are more visual learners then YouTube is a great resource.

I'm not currently offering to ship to other international destinations. Whilst I did previously ship to Europe, due to Brexit and EU VAT changes I am no longer doing so. Unfortunately, it is not cost-effective for me as a small business to deal with VAT collection for EU orders.
All international deliveries will be sent by tracked postage (currently at a flat rate delivery cost of £8.75). As there are still delays within postal and customs systems, sending items tracked helps with a slightly faster delivery time. Plus, you can check where in the world it is on its journey to you.

Want to tell someone something special? Morse Code can say it for you. It could be as simple as 'I love you' or 'best Auntie'. But it also could be something big like 'Marry me?' and used as part of your marriage proposal.
Okay, maybe not entirely secret as Morse Code isn’t a big secret itself!
However, many people will not understand Morse Code. Or be able to decipher your bracelet or necklace with its hidden message. (Not sure how to read Morse Code yourself? Then check out my 'How To Read & Understand Morse Code Jewellery' blog post to learn more.)
So you can wear Morse Code jewellery with a motivational positive message. Such as 'I can', 'keep going', 'never give up' or 'I am enough' without having to explain your reasons for wearing that particular message. Or if you’re really daring, 'Fuck it' and 'Fuck off' are quite popular Morse Code jewellery expressions!
Morse Code jewellery is dainty, simple and elegant looking in its design. But packed with meaning for the gift giver and recipient.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for, then you can make up your own secret message. Morse Code items are easy to personalise with a custom name, words or even dates. A truly unique gift for instance for an anniversary present would be your wedding date on a Morse Code bracelet.
]]>(A telegraph key communications device that uses Morse Code to send messages (Photo Credit: Hisks))
Morse Code is a way of representing letters, numbers and punctuation as dots (•) and dashes (—). They can be represented visually or via sound (the dots making a shorter sound and the dashes being a longer sound).
Morse Code was first invented by Samuel Morse in 1844. It was quickly expanded and improved upon by Alfred Vail. These first versions are known as American Morse Code. Further changes have been made over time with a number of different versions in use, however the most common is International Morse Code.
It’s a bracelet or necklace that uses dots and dashes to create a name, a saying or a personalised message. These can be created by hand stamping the dots and dashes symbols on metal, or more commonly by using beads.
For a more realistic Morse Code look then round and tube-shaped beads are used. The round beads will represent the dots and the longer tube-shaped beads will represent the dashes. Some Morse Code jewellery will use different coloured beads instead of different shapes.
In Morse Code, there are tiny gaps between letters and slightly longer gaps between words. When writing down Morse Code the letter gaps are usually written with a space e.g. ••• •• ••• — • •—• ••• (sisters). The word gaps are usually written with a slash e.g. —••• • ••• — / —— ••— —— (best mum). However, these aren’t always represented in Morse Code jewellery. If they are, often some sort of spacer denotes the word gaps, which is different to the beads used for the dots and dashes.
Using this bracelet example, it reads:
I ••
am •— ——
enough • —• ——— ••— ——• ••••
The first image allows the wearer to read the 'I am enough' bracelet. Whilst the second image allows others to view it.
There are plenty of reasons to buy Morse Code jewellery. But at its heart, it’s a way of having dainty, elegant jewellery that is meaningful to you with a personalised message. A simple message can say a lot.
This style of jewellery is dainty, simple, yet elegant. With a secret message that can be great fun to give as a gift that holds specific meaning to you and the recipient.
Choose from one of my predefined options of words or sayings. Or make the Morse Code items truly your own by choosing a custom name or personalised words. A simple message can say a lot! So whatever secret message you want to create, it will be meaningful and heartfelt.
There can be limitations with the length of the Morse Code message that can fit onto a bracelet. If you’re unsure whether your custom words/phrases will fit the particular bracelet length you want to buy, then send me a message. Tell me the words/phrases and the bracelet length you would like and I can let you know whether that will work. If it can’t fit, I will offer an alternative suggestion. Or you might have to get creative with your message or shorten it in some way for it to fit the required bracelet size.
Each Morse Code bracelet and necklace comes with its own message card. The cards detail what the Morse Code message means. (I try to print separate words of the Morse Code message on different lines on the card. However, if space is limited and more than one word is on the same line, then / shows where one word ends and a new one starts).
Do you want to learn more and understand how to read your Morse Code jewellery? Then check out my 'How To Read Morse Code Jewellery' blog post.
Like the idea of sending a secret message gift, but want a smaller gift, or a non-jewellery gift? For those that do, I have also introduced a line of Morse Code keyrings and bag charms.
]]>Yet, the neckmess, is as the term describes a little bit messier looking. However, when styled right it can create a fabulous statement piece. (The originator of the #neckmess tag is Jessica Kagan Cushman. Check her out over on Instagram for extra inspiration.)
Choose necklaces that are of various lengths, steps of 2-3" difference are best. This allows enough space between the necklaces to be able to see each of them clearly. Rocks and Stars has used this technique to great effect to create this blue ensemble:
Consider the weight of the necklaces that you're using, so that they're also of varying weights. This helps them not get tangled quite as much as heavier necklaces can help hold lighter ones in place.
The theme can be colour and/or charms, etc. A consistent theme can tie the #neckmess together to create a whole. Roseark has used the themes of love along with a ruby red colour in their #neckmess creation:
It's also great to have a main focal point. In this case, the focal point is the arrow and heart charm necklaces that help draw the eye. But you can choose to use just one item that creates the focal point within your theme.
Adding asymmetry into one or more of the necklaces can add a little extra something to the #neckmess. You could use charms to place some asymmetry into your design. Or you could use an asymmetrical chain as Meg Bee has here:
Do expect the necklaces to move around, so every so often it helps to readjust and detangle them. Therefore, it is best to choose chains that are sturdy. That doesn't necessarily mean thick, as stainless steel chains can be quite fine. But it's best to use chains that can better handle being pulled at in order to detangle them.
Choose a plain coloured top to wear with your creation, it will allow your #neckmess creation to be the star. (Don't make the mistake I did below by wearing a striped top - oops!)
Layering necklaces isn't something I tend to do with my necklaces. I prefer a single necklace focal point. However, I'd thought I'd have a bit of fun and try it out myself.
I decided to build my #neckmess around a starry night sky theme. I started with the sun and the smaller moon star necklaces. I found that placing the heavier necklaces on top helped hold these lighter ones better in place. I then added the larger crescent moon star charm necklace with a 22" chain. Finally I added the shortest necklace, a 16" dainty chainmaille necklace. To invoke the idea of twinkling stars, I also added some orange crystals to my design.
Let me know in the comments below or link to me on Instagram @purplewyvernjewels to show me your creation.
]]>Even a little purchase is important to a small business. So they offer better customer service and put the customer experience first. Whilst to a big company, a customer is just another number.
Purchasing from a local small business helps keep jobs and money in your local community.

When you shop small, it can be a more ethical and sustainable way of shopping. Not all, but many small businesses try to minimise the impact their business has. They know where they source their supplies from, what packaging they use, etc. Many small businesses are also makers, producing goods locally.
Small businesses offer a greater choice and variety of unique and original items. Many will also be able to offer a personalised buying experience.
For independent sellers, their business is a reflection of who they are. Therefore they focus on the details. Offering excellent value and good quality products and services.
Many online small businesses also sell through large marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Not On The High Street etc. It can be difficult for them to drive enough customers to their own website to operate a viable business without selling via marketplaces. These large marketplaces have the advantage of customer numbers. But with higher costs and strict rules for independent sellers to adhere to. If you want to support a small business, then buy direct from their website. If you find them on a marketplace, search their name and see whether they have their own dedicated website you can buy through instead.
If you loved or liked their product, then leave a review to let other customers know what their products and service are like. You can either write a review on their website or a Google review if they have it set up. (Or even better leave reviews on both!) In the case that you've had an issue, then contact them directly to give them a chance to remedy it before leaving your review. Customer service is very important to a small business and they will try to fix any problems for you.
Tell others! Recommendations are huge for a small business to gain new customers. So share on social media and in-person to let others know of your wonderful find.
Some people may be cautious about buying directly from a small business and that is actually a good thing to be. Unfortunately, there are plenty of scams online and some unscrupulous sellers. So how do you find the genuine and good business sellers?
If they sell in several places online (like in online marketplaces) check out their reviews on the different sites. Don't forget to check any google reviews and customer comments on social media. This helps to see what other customers have made of their products and customer service.
Okay, I know this is boring and you might not need to read all of them. But a skim over will help you see whether they have a good understanding of selling online and what it means to provide good customer service.
Do their policies cover information about things like: shipping costs; dispatch times; delivery estimates; how to cancel or exchange an order; refund information; how they deal with lost packages; how they deal with incorrect, faulty or damaged items? Do they also have a privacy statement? It should explain what information they collect, how it's used and how you can contact them about your privacy rights.
Having such detailed information shows that they have thought through different customer issues. It lets customers know how they will deal with them given different situations.
Can you find their email address and physical address where you can contact them? Many small businesses will provide a telephone number too, but not all. Individual sellers may only have a personal phone number and prefer to keep all contact via email. Email correspondence allows both the business and customer to have a written record of any discussion, that they can refer back to.
When purchasing you always want to make sure the web address starts with https - the s stands for secure. You should also see a padlock icon next to the web address.
The best way to protect yourself when shopping online is to pay via credit card or another secure online payment system like PayPal. If you run into any difficulties with obtaining your money back, you can then contact your payment company to help you get your refund.
Under UK consumer laws you have rights and protections regarding being able to cancel an order, return an item, replacing of faulty items, etc. If you want to find out more, Which? has several advice guides about online shopping consumer rights.
Do you have some favourite small businesses you love to support? Leave me a comment below with a link to their websites and I might include them in a future post celebrating small businesses.

]]>That was me this week!
Well, this week I was taking part in the "Supercharge Your Website Challenge" by Vicki Jakes. I stumbled across a link someone had posted in a busy small business Facebook group I'm a member of (so it's easy to miss posts). The link was to a free challenge that was taking place this week. So I signed up – hey who doesn't like free! I wasn't sure what value I would get out of something that was free, but thought it was worth a go. You never know, I might pick up a tip or two.
So each day there was a task to do looking at different aspects related to your website. The tasks are designed not to take too long, for people to be able to achieve them and get them done. For every task, there was feedback and comments that help question what you're doing and why. Any extra questions were then answered in a live evening video.
From the very first day, there were gems of advice and insight that helped me to look at things in a different way. I always knew this website isn't for me, it may be about me and what I do, but it's not for me, it's for you!
This challenge has enabled me to tweak what I had created for purplewyvernjewels.com. It helped me see that I needed to edit my menus and change where I had my information links. I also changed some phrasing to make it more streamlined and easier for you to use. Plus, there were a load of tips and advice for improving my website behind the scenes. I was doing these short tasks and then realising I need to change this and alter that. So I ended up spending way more time than I'd expected in changing things to improve the customer experience. This website will always be a work in progress to make it the best I can. But Vicki really helped me see it differently, in a no-nonsense, easy and positive way.
When you're so used to looking at something, as the saying goes, sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees. Sometimes to see the wood you need someone else to light the way.

]]>"Introduce yourself and your brand to the world, let people in behind the scenes of how and where you work and show everyone the various different aspects of running a small creative business! There's something for everyone!"
So meet Purple Wyvern Jewels...
Where does my business name come from? Well...
Purple - my favourite colour
Wyvern - a mythical creature and close relative to a dragon, in reference to my love of fantasy books, who love sparkly beautiful...
Jewels
I started Purple Wyvern Jewels back in 2012 and my original logo was of a cute little purple dragon. Over the years, what I have made has changed and my cute dragon logo didn't fit my brand as well as it used to, so I did a re-brand last year. My dragon may still pop up from time to time, but he's now retired and having a well-earned rest.
Purple Wyvern Jewels, the brand, primarily focuses on creating and selling personalised jewellery and keyrings that are love and family-focused. Including memorial remembrance keepsakes with a particular focus on baby and pregnancy loss. Whilst experiencing infertility, I came to know many other wonderful women through an online message board who had experienced the heartache of a miscarriage. I learnt how important it was to them to have their loss acknowledged in some way.
My style (or theme might be a better way to describe it), is centred around love and family. Offering the ability to customise and personalise with initial letters and birth month crystals. Predominately using sterling silver or stainless steel metals.
I think that my beliefs and values can be summed up in the word quality, quality of parts, of finished product and of good customer service.
I've moved away from cheaper parts to higher quality stainless steel and sterling silver ones. This has not only had the added benefit of an overall higher quality product that will last longer but it's also resulted in less wastage of parts (bent/scratched/marked parts would happen with the cheaper ones). Less wastage is obviously better for the environment! Plus, I've tried to reduce plastic use and reuse when I can. I haven't been able to eliminate all plastic but have actively reduced it. And switched to some fabulous presentation boxes made from recycled card from Eco-Craft.
I don't have a traditional desk that I work from. Which given the fact that the desk in my house along with the kitchen table are in regular use by other family members for work and homeschooling right now (hey COVID pandemic!), it's been useful that I have a set-up that means I don't need to use those spaces.
I have a side table that's just the perfect size to fit my laptop (essential for any online business) and boxes of parts and tools, so they're easy to hand when I need them. Plus a small folding lap desk (that my laptop can sit on when I want it right in front of me) but doubles up as my main workspace for creating my items.
Another essential item is my notebook. Which is effectively an ongoing to-do list, list of social media posts/blog posts, items that need photographing/editing, ideas for new products and anything else that I want to remember.
My latest creation is a keyring in celebration of adoption. It symbolises that wishes can come true...
WEEKEND BREAK
Traditionally this concept would be showing pictures of what products are currently being worked on or developed. As, plenty of my other posts in this #marchmeetthemaker challenge will include showing off of products, I wanted to flip this around and focus on something different.
Running your own business is always a work in progress. Quite often that means learning new things; working on improving how and what you do (not just creating products, but of photography and social media etc); keeping on top of changes that are happening, particularly with selling online and rules/laws/tax changes etc. There is so much that goes into the daily work of running even a small business, that for me it always feels like it's a work in progress.
When I started this business, I went through a huge learning curve. Never having run my own business, nor sold products online before, I found that I had a lot to learn.
If there was one piece of advice I would give to someone else wanting to pursue a similar endeavour, be flexible/adaptable. What might work and sell well right now can be entirely different next year. Fads come and go, tastes change as to what people want to buy. Suppliers will stop selling certain parts or even go out of business, having a knock-on impact to your own. Being able to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances will help you to continue on. And that's in normal times, not to mention any curveballs that are thrown in by a worldwide pandemic!
Of all the things I find the most challenging, I would have to say product photography. However, with a light case and plenty of practice in editing photos I've improved these over the years. What do you find to be the most challenging aspect or the greatest learning curve?
Sometimes the small details come down to using the right tools for the job.
For example, when creating loops in wires (for instance in my crystal charms), Wubbers looping pliers over other round nose pliers are the right tool to use. Unlike other pliers which have a tapered edge that you wrap the wire around, these looping pliers have a consistent thickness. This means that every single time I make a metal loop they will be exactly the same size.
Hello! This is me, the face behind the brand Purple Wyvern Jewels. I don't like taking pictures of myself, but for today's March Meet The Maker prompt of portrait, I decided to just go for it. I took this picture today on my walk posting out orders, it was a sunny but very blustery and windy day, hence the windswept hair!
Obviously, I sell jewellery to be worn, plus keyrings and bag charms that - obviously - get used as keyrings and bag charms. However, a way that one customer used a bag charm they purchased from me, that I had never even thought of up to that point, was attached to their wedding bouquet. I only found out when they left me the above lovely review.
What's something that had personal meaning to you, that you have used in a different way?
WEEKEND BREAK
My main focus and priority is redoing my product photos. As one of the sites I sell through has stipulated that they now want products photographed on plain white backgrounds. Fortunately, my product photo-taking/editing skills have improved over the years. So I'm able to get product photos on a pure white background. (Just for fun, I've added an old product and a current product done on white backgrounds. It's one of the reasons I went with a non-white background for a really long time as I struggled to get a proper white background.)
→
The other main focus is to add extra products, particularly focusing on more stainless steel charm products so that I am able to offer a wider range. At some point, I would like to create more macramé tutorials (which I sell exclusively through Etsy due to digital tax reasons). But they take me quite some time to put together, so they're unlikely to happen for quite a while.
I started out making jewellery with semi-precious gemstones. I loved coming up with different designs and ways of combining colours. The oval purple amethyst necklace was one of the very first items I sold. The butterfly pendant was the most intricate wire wrapping creation I made. The last photo shows some of my product evolution as I moved on to creating macramé items after that.
What I make and sell is ever-evolving. Some is down to the fact I like to try and make different styles (most recently I've been making some chainmaille items). The rest is down to changing customers tastes.
I try to edit similar product photos together, I find that it saves me time, but also makes it easier to have a consistent size and look to the product photos.
My photo editing programme of choice is GIMP, it does what I need it to do and best of all it's free!
Black • Pink • Purple • Silver
Throughout the entire time, Purple Wyvern Jewels has been in business, these colours are my predominant go-to colours. Whether that was back when I was making gemstone jewellery, macramé jewellery and even now in my packaging and business branding.
These days, the majority of my products aren't bold in colour, they tend to be silver with splashes of colour added by the use of coloured crystals.
What colours are your go-to colours, that you always like to have?

Today's prompt is silver linings and positives that came out of 2020...
It's easy to focus on the negatives as the COVID pandemic has had a huge impact on everyone's lives, but what's your silver lining for 2020?
WEEKEND BREAK
Currently working on some beaded chainmaille ideas...
People have a tendency to assume that running your own creative business involves designing and making items and then packaging them up for customers.
Whilst that obviously is a part of what I do, the reality is that I spend plenty of time on all the "other stuff". The stuff that actually supports and keeps the business running. Like stock control, supply purchasing, photography, website and social media managing, customer service etc.
All items are packaged in a cardboard gift box (available from Eco-Craft) that is made from 100% recycled card that is ready for gifting.
I have been actively trying to reduce the amount of plastic in my packaging and minimise it as much as possible. However, I am unlikely to be able to eliminate it entirely. For sterling silver items, the jewellery item is attached to a rectangular card inside a resealable plastic bag, that is then placed inside the cardboard gift box. This is to ensure the sterling silver item reaches you in perfect condition without any tarnishing of the sterling silver.
My starting point varies... Sometimes, I might be browsing a suppliers shop to see what else they have, which inspires me to create something new. Other times I play around with parts that I already have and see what other combinations of ideas I can come up with. To maximise the items I can make out of the parts I already have.
My latest starting point for my newest creations was chain offcuts. I'm able to purchase sterling chain in long sections so I don't have many offcuts/wastage with it. However, the stainless steel chain is only available in smaller lengths. So I find that I have lots of extra smaller pieces of chain left over after making necklaces. These smaller chain lengths are ideal for use in bracelets. I've just been needing to come up with more ideas to have a wider variety of stainless steel bracelets. If you check out my post three days ago (day 22 "Hands On") you'll get a sneak peek of what I'm working on, plus I'll show the final product next week (day 30 "Range").
One of my favourite creations that I've made was this green agate teardrop sterling silver necklace. It's a combination of the translucent green colour of the agate and how the gemstones hung on the necklace that invokes a cascading waterfall imagery to me.
What's your favourite item of jewellery and why?
WEEKEND BREAK
I've never made an Instagram reel before (a short video of up to either 15s or 30s). So it took me longer to figure out how to make one (as I wanted to be able to remove the sound, edit it and speed it up to fit in the time allowed) than it actually did to create it!
I created a reel showing me making up a necklace box and packaging my personalised initial stainless steel world earth map charm necklace. I hope you enjoy watching it.
I've given hints about a new range of jewellery items I've been working on recently (see day 25 - starting point and day 22 - hands on). So here's introducing my new range of beaded chainmaille jewellery just released for sale today!
The bracelets started from an idea of trying to come up with more ideas to have a wider variety of stainless steel bracelets. To help make use of chain offcuts from when I make stainless steel necklaces. The necklaces and pendants evolved out of the bracelet designs.
I can't believe it's already the end of March and the end of #marchmeetthemaker2021 and thank you to @joannehawker for organising!
So today's prompt is looking forward. Oh, this is a tough one. It's difficult to see what the future holds unless you have a crystal ball...
So what will I be doing next? I have some more chainmaille jewellery ideas. Plus I plan on adding more charm items with personalised birth month crystal options. In the longer term, who knows... I started Purple Wyvern Jewels back in 2012 and it has evolved and changed over the years with the style of jewellery that I make, plus I enjoy the challenge of creating different styles of jewellery, so I'll just have to see where inspiration takes me...
I hoped you enjoyed getting to know more about Purple Wyvern Jewels!
]]>Unfortunately it's 2021, and we're still in lockdown... Whether you wish to celebrate or be commerative of a loss, it has to be done remotely this year (like many things did in 2020).
I've put together a Mother's Day Gift Guide of unique and customisable memorable jewellery and keepsakes for those that wish to purchase items either as gifts or for themselves. All my items are packaged in gift boxes ready for gifting. So do remember that you can have your order delivered directly to the person you wish to gift an item to (just make sure to enter the correct delivery address when ordering).

These changes mean that I do not need to go to a post office. Therefore, I am able to post straight into a post box and enable me to socially distance whilst still offering an ordering facility to UK customers.
* Unfortunately, the temporary changes that I made back in March 2020 have been more prolonged than I hoped, but I will change this back as soon as I am able to, which hopefully will be in 2021 at some point!
I hope that orders will be received quite promptly, however, experience from this year shows that even 1st Class postage (which normally would arrive in 1 - 3 business days) can take 2 weeks to be delivered if there are postal delays.
All items are packaged ready for gifting. So do remember that you can have your order delivered directly to the person you wish to gift an item to (just make sure to enter the correct delivery address when ordering). All orders will be sent by 1st Class Royal Mail, however delivery times are highly likely to take longer than normal for some time yet.
I will stay open to customers for as long as possible. However, there may be times when I have to temporarily stop taking new orders, whether that's due to tighter movement restrictions or if self-quarantine is necessary. If I do need to temporarily close, I will contact any customer whose order hasn't yet been shipped to offer them a chance to cancel and have their order refunded.
Last, but not least, I hope 2021 will be a better year for us all, and stay safe everyone!
]]>Unfortunately, this year's celebrations will be different, it's very unlikely we all will be able to do the big family get togethers (at least in person), but modern technology, fortunately, allows us to video call and still see our loved ones, even if it is over a screen.
With yet another major lockdown here in the UK, buying gifts for the holiday season will be very different too. More than ever, shopping online will be HUGE this year.
With the extra increase in online shopping, there will be a knock on impact on shipping and delivery times. The Christmas season is always busy for the delivery services like Royal Mail, but with working restrictions (due to COVID-19) and the heavy reliance on the postal services for shipping this year, delivery times are likely to be far slower than normal.
This year I'm recommending my UK customers to order by the end of November for orders they wish to receive for Christmas. I am unable to guarantee Christmas deliveries, as I am reliant on the postal services to deliver orders. I hope that orders will be received quite promptly, however, experience from earlier this year shows that even 1st Class postage can take 2 weeks to be delivered if there are postal delays.
So please do order early this year.

]]>Over the years, I've created different styles of jewellery. I enjoy the process of learning a new jewellery technique and making creations with these different techniques. Recently, I have been exploring and creating chainmaille items. Chainmaille (or chainmail) is the art of creating items by linking jump rings together.
Obviously, the thing that most people think of when someone mentions chainmaille, is chainmaille armour. However, it can also be used to create so much more...
Whatever your personal style is, there can be a chainmaille creation for you!
It isn't just about chunky statement pieces, that if you search on the internet you are likely to see images of. Whilst, some of those are really intricate and unique, with modern parts, it's possible to create lightweight and dainty chainmaille jewellery, which I believe will complement any outfit.
I personally love elegant, lightweight and everyday wear creations like the linked circle love knot necklace, the dainty simple chainmaille bracelet and necklace that are linked below.
However, if you like to make a statement with your jewellery pieces, like the stars chainmaille bracelet and necklace below, chainmaille allows you to do that too. With the stainless steel parts I use to create these items, they are strong and yet, still lightweight and dainty all at the same time.
]]>After lockdown finished here in the UK and shops started opening again, we headed out on a family bike ride and stopped for a break and snack at one of the local coffee shops. The cakes there are always fresh and super soft. I reckon they could easily sell themselves, to anyone that ever tasted them.
This isn't one of those cakes, but it still looks pretty tasty...
Whilst ordering our cakes, the server mentioned an offer they were running where you got extra at a reduced price. Said no thanks. (Now don't get me wrong, I'm fine with someone pointing out an offer or information I might not have seen). But then, we get to the too desperate hard sell. The server then asks would you like this cake too, we're got an offer on if you buy more cakes.
Do you? Certainly not me. I really, I mean REALLY, hate the hard sell. Both as a customer and as a seller.
Nope. Not interested in buying more cake. This is the point that I personally switch off from what someone's trying to sell me, as I don't need to be told more than once about the same offer. We went with just the cakes we originally ordered as they are delicious, but for me, some of the enjoyment of the moment was lessened by the hard sell approach. I get that times right now are hard for businesses, that those that were severely impacted by the lockdown are trying to make up for financial losses that they've incurred, but coming across as desperate can be very off-putting.
Were you the child that would take forever to make a choice? Yep, I was. I like to think about things, mull things over, compare items and take a good look at the details. That's why I include as much detail as I can about the products I make on my product listings, why I have loads of questions and answers on my FAQ page, that I hope will answer any question you might have (and if it doesn't I'm always willing to answer customer questions). It's particularly hard when buying online, as you can't touch and see the item in person, so you have to make the decision about purchasing by the photos, product information, reviews etc.
Of course! But I also want you to be happy with your purchases too! If a business is being pushy (aka the "hard sell"), then a customer is going to feel rushed into purchasing (either because the discount is for a very limited time only or some other such tactic) that encourages you to be hasty and make a quick decision. Then you are more likely to realise it's not what you really want when you actually receive the item in person and have had time to think things over (aka "I'll make my mind up in my own time"). Do I have offers and discounts, of course. But I don't do the flash sales, the very short limited time offers, so you can take your time to choose items and purchase when the time is right for you.
I've made myself hungry for cake now too. Sorry about that, but I couldn't talk about cake and not add a picture of some tasty looking cake!

]]>Here in the UK, like many other countries, we are now greatly restricted with what we can do in order to socially-distance ourselves from each other. Currently, most people are allowed to leave the house for one form of exercise per day and to also go out to do food shopping or to obtain medications. Due to these restrictions, I have had to make the following temporary changes to what I am able to deliver:
These changes mean that I do not need to go to a post office. Therefore, I am able to post straight into a post box (via my allowed one walk per day) and enable me to socially distance whilst still offering an ordering facility to UK customers.
All items are packaged ready for gifting. So do remember that you can have your order delivered directly to the person you wish to gift an item to (just make sure to enter the correct delivery address when ordering). If you have a friend or family member who has a birthday soon, please order in plenty of time. All orders will be sent by 1st Class Royal Mail, however delivery times may vary and possibly take longer than normal during this time period.
Last, but not least, stay safe everyone.
